Canada: The Molson Coors beer giant, which is officially completing its merger today, February 9, is focusing on two downtown Denver skyscrapers for its corporate headquarters, sources said Tuesday. Molson Coors Brewing Co. is looking at the 32-story 17th Street Plaza, at 1225 17th St., and the 30-story Tabor Center, across the street at 1200 17th St., according to people familiar with the situation.

Earlier, the company had considered buildings in Interlocken in Broomfield, although that appears to be off the table, according to one broker, who asked not to be identified.

Officials from Jones Lang LaSalle, which manages 17th Street Plaza, and Equity Office Properties referred all calls to the Adolph Coors Co. Coors officials did not return calls.

Molson Coors reportedly has looked at all the major submarkets in the metro area but is no longer considering the southeast or northwest areas.

The new company likes the 17th Street Plaza and Tabor Center because of their locations at the edge of lower downtown and their ease of access to Golden, where Coors has long been headquartered, and to Denver International Airport, sources said. Both buildings are considered among the top tier of office towers downtown.

Issues that have not been resolved include exactly how many people would move and how much square footage the company would take. But brokers expect the company to eventually move 100 to 150 people into the headquarters and lease 30,000 to 45,000 square feet. That would mean taking about two floors in either the 17th Street Plaza or the Tabor Center.

Broker and real estate consultant Bill Jenkins of the Laramie Co., who has negotiated a subleased office deal at 17th Street Plaza, said either building would be a good choice.

"I'm not in the inside circles, but it seems logical to me," Jenkins said. "They're both great buildings. And Leo Kiely (the chairman of the new company) lives downtown, so he could walk to work."

The new Molson Coors Brewing Co., jointly controlled by the founding families, will be the world's fifth-largest brewer by volume. The company will have $6.2 billion in annual sales and at current prices has a market capitalization of about $6.6 billion.

Molson Coors Brewing Co. reportedly is looking at two downtown Denver buildings: Tabor Center, 30 stories at 1200 17th St.; 17th St. Plaza, at 1225 17th St., 32 stories. The company is expected to move 100 to 150 people into the headquarters. Leased space would be about 30,000 to 45,000 square feet on two floors.
